Hospital Fire Sprinklers Systems

All sprinklered hospitals in the greater New York City area are required to have their sprinkler systems fully inspected and tested by a licensed Master Fire Suppression Contractor.

Full record of the design, installation, testing, and inspections may be requested on demand by city officials and/or the FDNY. Allstate Sprinkler is NYC’s leading Master Fire Suppression Contractor and is highly regarded by the FDNY to ensure hospital properties and the lives within these facilities are fully protected.

What Types of Medical Facilities Need Fire Protection?

In addition to the hospitals mentioned above, there are many other types of medical facilities that require fire sprinkler protection. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Hospice center.
  • Outpatient clinic.
  • Long-term care facility.
  • Assisted living facility.
  • Dental practice.
  • Surgical center.
  • Blood bank.
  • Dialysis center.
  • Radiology center.

Local Law 26

The enforcement of New York City’s Local Law 26, which mandates the retrofit of many medical facilities previously exempt from the building code, is resulting in noncompliance with quarterly fines being assessed until the hospital or medical facility is brought up to code.

If you require a new sprinkler system to be installed or an alteration made to an existing system but have not yet started the process, the fines could become VERY expensive. Therefore, it’s imperative that you act as quickly as possible to remedy the situation. Both the Department of Buildings and the FDNY can assess significant fines. However, Allstate Sprinkler can often reduce or eliminate these fines if the issued violation(s) are answered timely.

The most frequent FDNY violation(s) that building owners/managers (including hospitals) receive is the failure to keep accurate inspection, testing and maintenance records. We maintain electronic copies of all the inspections and tests performed and have them available immediately upon demand.

NFPA 25

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) standard #25 for the inspection, testing and maintenance of all water-based fire sprinkler systems must be performed by an FDNY-certified contractor such as Allstate Sprinkler.

Inspections and testing occur on the following schedule:

  • Monthly.
  • Quarterly.
  • Annual.

Each inspection is more thorough as the year progresses.

Monthly testing consists of a visual inspection of most of the systems’ components.

The quarterly test and inspection involves the monthly visual inspections as well as inspecting the sprinkler riser’s hydraulic placard, if relevant, as well as ensuring there is adequate clearance at the main sprinkler components.

The annual test for hospitals requires different regiments to be performed in the 1st year and then again in the 5th year. Every yearly inspection will include all of the monthly and quarterly visual inspections, as well as a complete flow test and full fire pump test.

The 5-year inspection includes an internal assessment to assess the potential obstruction of water flow caused by foreign materials or the build-up of sediment.

A weekly inspection should also be performed by in-house personnel to perform a simplified, visual inspection to ensure nothing looks out of place or sprinkler heads are not obstructed by any stock or portable racking/ shelving, etc.
