As a business owner, you have a legal obligation to safeguard your employees and customers against possible hazards, including fires. One way to ensure this is to equip your building with the appropriate number and type of fire extinguishers.
Though small, these portable canisters are your first line of defense against an unexpected fire. To ensure their utmost effectiveness, we use our 50 years of experience and state regulations to guide you throughout the installation of extinguishers throughout your commercial building.
Portable Fire Extinguisher Installation Requirements
Fire extinguisher installation is not an option for commercial building owners — it’s the law. Per local fire codes, all buildings and structures must be protected with fire protection equipment, including portable fire extinguishers.
The number of extinguishers required per square foot varies according to building type, but the general rule is fire extinguishers should be placed so that the maximum travel distance to any one extinguisher does not exceed 75 feet.
Each extinguisher must be conspicuously located. If an extinguisher is obstructed from view for any reason, the building manager must place signage indicating where an extinguisher is located.
In addition to quantity, placement and mounting regulations, NYC also has type requirements based on fire classifications.
Those classifications are as follows:
Class A:Common fires that involve cloth, wood, paper, plastic and other ordinary combustibles.
Class B:Fires that are the result of the ignition of flammable liquids.
Class C:Electrical fires.
Class D:Atypical fires that are the result of the ignition of flammable metals.
Class K:Kitchen grease fires.
The FDNY Conducts Compliance Checks on an Annual Basis.
If your building is in violation of any regulation requirements, it may issue a fine of up to $1,000 PER violation, PER extinguisher.
A second or subsequent offense can result in a fine of up to $5,000 PER violation PER extinguisher. Failure to correct the issue can result in more fines and possible revocation of your business permit.
