FDNY ARC System Installation

A fire is one of the most devastating events that can occur. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security warns that it takes just 30 seconds for a small flame to become a significant fire. From there, it only takes a few minutes for black smoke to move throughout a building and communication is extremely challenging.

Auxiliary Radio Communication Systems (ARCS) provide a dedicated communication medium for the First Responders while responding to the emergency in that particular building. The First Responders, including the FDNY, NYPD, EMTs, FBI, CIA, Port Authority PD, and the Federal Secret Service are able to communicate via a frequency spectrum that is exclusive to their equipment.

Installing an FDNY ARCS in NYC enables communication across all First Responder personnel to address the emergencies with greater precision and will improve the chances of saving your business and protecting the lives of all occupants as well as all First Responders.

What FDNY ARCS Regulations To Keep in Mind

For several types of structures, installing an FDNY radio system is mandatory. According to the City of New York, all newly constructed high-rise buildings erected after December 31, 2014 require the installation of fire radio systems.

An ARCS installation must follow specific criteria ensuring that the system operates on the FDNY’s designated frequency spectrum and specific duplex channels.

If you manage a building that is several stories tall, you might wonder what the building code classifies as a high-rise? According to the NYC building codes sections 403.4.4 and 907.2.13.2, any commercial building with a floor that is 75 feet above the lowest possible level of access for the Fire Department’s vehicles falls into this category. The threshold is at over 100 feet for residential buildings.

What To Expect When You Hire Our Team

As your FDNY ARCS installation expert, the Allstate Sprinkler team works with you to ensure that you understand what the requirements are for installation. We also want to ensure that you understand the responsibilities that follow the installation of an FDNY radio system.

The first step is to engineer and then file for the FDNY ARCS. For newly constructed buildings that do require an FDNY radio system, the filing process will need to begin long before the building manifests itself in physical form. The first filing process can take as long as six weeks but can be completed within four weeks. Here are some timeline events:

  1. During the filing period, we provide updates we receive from the FDNY and answer any questions you have.
  2. After approval, we can begin the physical installation process.
  3. Once the installation is completed, we then initiate a second filing on your behalf.
  4. If the FDNY makes objections, we resolve these.
  5. Finally, the Fire Department completes an inspection and testing of the system.

We work with you and your engineers to ensure everything is performed as planned so your building receives final approval. Our hands-on approach to this lengthy and sometimes frustrating process is why so many of our clients have enjoyed working with us from the very start and now rely on our expertise for maintenance and inspections.
